Blacksburg Housing Information
The Virginia Tech HFES Mentoring Program
would like to assist you with finding a place to live in Blacksburg. The
following information is based on the findings of a survey that was distributed
to all of the current Human Factors graduate students at Virginia Tech. This
housing mailer focuses on apartment living because 95% of the graduate students
who responded to the survey either currently live in or have only lived in
Blacksburg apartments.
Excellent Housing Resources

- The Virginia Tech Off-Campus Housing Center: Phone = (540) 231-3466,

They have a searchable database of available apartments, rooms, roommates,
etc.
General Considerations
- Large Apartment Communities usually have more personnel to handle your
customer service needs (lease signing/move-in process and maintenance
responses are generally faster).
- The apartments that are “just across the street” from campus or in the
heart of downtown Blacksburg were not rated as high as the apartment
communities (one to three miles out) in terms of their overall condition
(carpet, walls, drapes, and appliances).
- Because parking is difficult during the fall and spring semesters, you may
want to find an apartment close to VT or one with Blacksburg Transit bus
stops.
- The buses in Blacksburg run anywhere from once every 7 ˝ minutes to once
an hour, depending on the bus line.
- Some of the buses to Christiansburg run once an hour or twice a day.
- For bus schedules visit the Blacksburg Transit website http://www.btransit.org/
- One drawback of some of the larger apartment complexes is that they can
have thin ceilings and walls. Therefore, it is not uncommon to hear footsteps
on the ceiling or music from neighboring apartments from time to time.
