picnic will be held at the home of Deb Young (ISE instructor, and graduate
student). Please bring any of the following, as your preferences dictate:
your significant others/families, a dish to share, your bathing suit and a
sleeping bag -- if you plan to become a squatter. (no dogs, please
too many critters as it is)

The Virginia Tech HFES Chapter proudly presents a lunchtime seminar by our own Dr. Kari Babski-Reeves on Wednesday March 30th at 12pm. Her seminar is entitled "Industrial Ergonomics: Injury Prevention and Control and Research Thrusts". The abstract below details her seminar topic. Please plan to attend to learn more about Dr. Kari Babski-Reeves' interesting work. Pizza will be served.
Abstract: This
seminar will present Dr. Kari Babski-Reeves' current primary research thrusts
areas. Her research is directed at preventing and controlling workplace injuries
and illnesses. Currently she is using several approaches to quantify exposure
levels to risk factors, develop predictive models for injury and risk, and
develop interventions to reducing injury rates. Other research interests and
application areas will be presented also.

The Virginia Tech HFES Chapter proudly presents a seminar by current HFES National President Wendy Rogers, Ph.D. Professor in the School of Psychology at Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Rogers will be speaking about her work in aging and the Aware Home, which is focused on developing psychological and computer science to support home activities, especially for older adults.

The VT HFES Chapter proudly presents
a seminar by Dr. Suzie Lee of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute
(VTTI). She will be speaking about VTTI and current research
topics in transportation research. Dr. Lee conducts human factors and safety research in the driving
environment. Her research projects conducted as a VTTI faculty member
include an operational review of specialty vehicles, the development and testing
of enhanced rear signaling systems, in-vehicle intersection violation avoidance
systems, and an in-depth evaluation of lane change behavior.

Subject: “Security as an Inspection Task: What can we learn from other Domains?
Dr. Drury was brought in by the Ingersoll-Rand endowed lecture series.
Dr. Colin Drury is Professor of Industrial Engineering at University at Buffalo, where his work emphasizes the application of human factors techniques to manufacturing and maintenance processes. He is currently the head of the FAA Research Group at SUNY Buffalo. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, the Ergonomics Society and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and received the Bartlett medal of the Ergonomics Society and the Fitts Award of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. He is also the North American editor-in-chief of the journal Applied Ergonomics.
