Thuesday, October 14th: VT Alumni Reunion in Colorado

Thursday, October 9th: Dinner and Bowling

HFES is organizing a Dinner and Bowling Social. Dinner will be at PK's (N. Main Street) at 5:00 pm on 9th October (Thursday) followed by bowling at the newly renovated Recreation Center at Squires at 7:00 pm.

Thursday is Tijuana Toss night at PKs so you stand a chance of winning FREE PIZZA at your table. Bowling is FREE.
So let's go bowling guys!!!

Tuesday, October 7th: Colorado Funding Meeting

A meeting is organized for students going to the National Conference in Denver. All are requested to attend as we will be discussing important issues like accommodation, Alumni Dinner etc.

It is mandatory for students requesting travel funding from HFES to attend this meeting. If you do not attend this meeting you will not be considered for funding. If for some reason you cannot attend the meeting then please email and let me know.
Only members who have paid their dues are eligible for funding. If you haven't paid your dues for the current year please contact Laura Hughes at lahughes@vt.edu.

Friday, October 3rd: HFES VT Picnic

Mr. Tom Pease, Usability Lead at Microsoft will be our first HFES speaker for the fall semester. Tom Pease has over 15 years of industry experience in user research and user interface design. He is currently a Usability Lead for the Real Time Collaboration Usability and Design team in the Business Productivity Division at Microsoft Corporation. He joined Microsoft in 1998 and has conducted usability research for a variety of products including Sharepoint Portal Server, Exchange Server, NetMeeting, InfoPath and Excel. Prior to Microsoft, he was a Lead Usability Engineer at Lexis-Nexis where his responsibilities included usability and user interface design for a number of information retrieval systems. Prior to that, he was a Human Factors Engineer at AT&T responsible for user interface design, training and technical document in their Provisioning Systems division. His interests include usability methods, information retrieval, information visualization, and computer supported collaborative work. Tom holds a Masters degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of Dayton.

Mr. Pease will be talking about Usability at Microsoft and the talk will be followed by an informal discussion on topics of interest to students.

Directions to Blacksburg Municipal Park Shelter III:

  1. From N. Main (coming from downtown), turn right onto Patrick Henry Dr.
  2. Go past the Recreation Center and turn right immediately after the Aquatic
    Center.
  3. There will be a parking lot on the right, and the road will bear left.
  4. Follow the road to the next parking lot on the right.
  5. The picnic shelter will be to the right.

 

Friday, September 5th: General Body Meeting

Time: 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Venue: 260 Durham

Come out for our first General Body Meeting of the Fall semester. The agenda for the meeting will be events for the Fall semester, collecting membership dues and acquiring member suggestions on activities they would like to see this semester. We will also be discussing the HFES national conference in Denver: registration, transportation, accommodation, roommates etc.

All are requested to attend to this meeting. Pizza and drinks will be served!

Students wanting to go to the National Conference are encouraged to register soon. You can register online at www.hfes.org. The registration fees for a student member is $110 which will be reimbursed if you volunteer 8 hrs. at the conference. In order to volunteer you must register first and then email carlos@hfes.org There are a limited number of volunteer requirements so early sign up is highly recommended.
